Back Pain Treatment

EXPERT UPPER AND LOWER BACK PAIN
TREATMENT IN EAST & WEST VOLUSIA

Back pain affects roughly 80 percent of adults and is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Most people experience it at least once. It can affect everything from your professional life to your self-confidence and overall sense of independence. Fortunately, most back pain can be successfully treated or prevented.

Back pain that appears suddenly and lasts fewer than six weeks is considered acute. Back pain lasting more than three months is considered chronic. There are many causes for back pain, such as mechanical problems, genetically inherited diseases, and injuries to the spine. If your pain lasts more than a few weeks, it’s time to see a doctor.

Common signs of back pain are:
   • Muscle aches
   • Shooting pains
   • Pain that radiates down the leg
   • Pain aggravated by lifting, bending, walking, or simply standing

Some of the most common culprits are:
   • Injuries (such as sprains and fractures)
   • Deterioration of intervertebral discs
   • Ruptured or bulging discs
   • Torn ligaments
   • Radiculopathy
   • Osteoporosis-related fractures
   • Accidents (e.g., auto accidents and slips/falls)

TREATMENTS AVAILABLE

PHYSICAL THERAPY  Our physical therapists will assess your underlying issues and treat your pain using any of the following methods: traction, manual therapy, soft tissue mobilization, ultrasound, electric muscle stimulation, and/or interferential stimulation.

MEDICATION MANAGEMENT Our physicians will determine the most effective medications for your specific needs and design a personalized regimen that takes into account your complete medical history.

TRIGGER POINT THERAPY Myofascial trigger points (or MTrPs) are painful areas in the muscles and one of the leading causes of chronic musculoskeletal pain (or myofascial pain). Our experts release these areas of pain and tension, to achieve long-term relief.

EPIDURAL STEROID INJECTION An epidural steroid injection is a minimally invasive procedure consisting of a corticosteroid and numbing agent. It is effective in providing relief for pain caused by inflamed nerves.

FACET JOINT INJECTIONS Facet joint injections are similar to epidural steroid injections, but they provide relief to pain associated with the facet joint, rather than the spine. Facet joint injections are effective in providing relief for pain resulting from inflammation and arthritis associated with the facet joint.

COMMONLY ASSOCIATED CONDITIONS

MUSCLE OR LIGAMENT STRAIN Heavy lifting and abrupt, awkward movements can strain the muscles in your back and the ligaments in your spine. Frequently introducing this kind of strain can result in painful spasms.

BULGING OR RUPTURED DISCS Between your vertebrae (the bones in your spine) are sponge-like cushions known as discs. These discs are filled with liquid and help absorb shock when you move around. The spongy material in a disc can bulge or rupture, placing pressure on a nerve. (It is worth noting that you can also have a bulging or ruptured disc without experiencing pain.)

OSTEOPOROSIS Osteoporosis means “porous bone.” When a bone becomes more porous––i.e., less dense––there is a greater chance of fracture. When it occurs in your spine, the vertebrae are more prone to compression fractures.

ARTHRITIS OF THE SPINE Spinal arthritis is a condition in which the tiny joints between the vertebra grow smaller, resulting in bone spurs or an enlargement of the joint, which causes the pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. (In some cases, spinal arthritis may lead to a narrowing of the space around the spinal cord, or spinal stenosis.) Spinal arthritis can be hard to treat and it sometimes requires surgery. But with our expertise, surgery can be avoided.

LUMBAR RADICULOPATHY Lumbar radiculopathy is caused by a pinched or inflamed nerve in the back. This can result in a variety of symptoms, such as severe back, groin, leg, and foot pain. (This condition is more commonly known as sciatica, and typically affects one side of the body.) Symptoms range from mild aches to sharp, burning sensations in the lower back and legs. Muscle weakness, numbness, and tingling are also commonly linked with lumbar radiculopathy. Fortunately, we can typically provide a quick diagnosis and long-term relief for this condition.

SACROILIAC JOINT PAIN The sacroiliac joint connects the spine to the pelvis. (There is one on both sides of the spine.) If you experience a dull pain in your lower back, it could be the result of sacroiliac joint pain. The sacroiliac joint absorbs pressure and facilitates bending backward and forward. Pain originating in this joint can radiate to your buttocks, thighs, groin, or upper back. Sacroiliac joint pain can be the result of an injury, arthritis, or even pregnancy. Our diverse team of specialists will relieve your pain and help strengthen your muscles to prevent this condition from returning.
