Effective migraine treatment
lies in correctly pinpointing the underlying cause of attacks. At COASTAL PAIN & NEUROLOGY CENTERS, we'll work with you to determine the root cause of your pain and identify triggers. Our experts will then use this information to reduce your reliance on medication and avoid invasive procedures.
Migraines often consist of a painful throbbing that is accompanied by nausea and a sensitivity to light and noise. These symptoms can last anywhere from hours to days and prove debilitating in their severity.
Common triggers are:
• Caffeine and alcohol
• Stress
• Hormonal changes (e.g., estrogen in women)
• Medications
• Foods
If you have migraines or a family history of migraines, our neurologists will assess your medical history, symptoms, and conduct a physical and neurological exam to reach an accurate diagnosis. The treatment you receive will be based on your individual history and triggers. This treatment may include medication to manage your pain and nausea, or other preventative options for more severe cases or those unresponsive to treatment. Preventative medications may include blood-pressure medicines or Botox injections.
After migraines, the most common types of headaches are:
TENSION HEADACHES
Tension headaches are perhaps the most common type of headache after migraines. They can feel like a tight band around your head, applying pressure to your forehead, temples, and the back of your head. This type of headache generally responds well to physical therapy and anti-inflammatories.
CLUSTER HEADACHES
Cluster headaches usually last fewer than a couple of hours and appear on one side of the head. They often occur many times throughout the day, continuing for days or weeks, then suddenly disappear for weeks or months.
After properly diagnosing your headache, our neurologists will look for an underlying condition that may be responsible for it. If none is found, our experts will develop a plan to shorten the duration, and reduce the severity of, your pain. Treatment may include physical therapy and medication.
